Welcome to vEyes (virtual Eyes) project’s web site.

The vEyes project was born on June 20th, 2012 in order to initially create an open hardware / software platform, on which to integrate "building blocks", that are solutions based on wearable technologies that can support people with visual impairment in daily actions (reading a text on paper, moving about avoiding obstacles, accessing drug information leaflets or label information on food products, integrating and making accessible biomedical devices such as glucometers or sphygmomanometers, etc.). But over time, the interests of vEyes have expanded by assistive technologies, towards the realization of support tools for medical research, biomedical research, bioinformatics and genetics research as well, with a focus on degenerative diseases, leading to severe vision losses as a primary result, up to eventual blindness. We are also dedicated to prevention, always within the field of eye diseases, especially in children.

In November 2014, this homonym non-profit organization was established from the above mentioned project, which, in addition to managing scientific activities, carries out continuous awareness campaigns in schools on the topic of visual impairment, and soon plans to start actions of psychological support on behalf of young patients suffering from debilitating eye diseases and their families and eye related consulting which will refer patients to their national reference centers for the treatment of their given identified pathologies.

vEyes Wear

The wearable platform was among the 10 winners (out of 428 competing projects) to call for ideas "think for social", an initiative promoted by the Vodafone Italia Foundation, in technical collaboration with PoliHub (the incubator of the Polytechnic University of Milan) in order to discover and support innovative projects that exploit new technologies to better respond to current and emerging social needs.

redEyes constitutes the core of the vEyes RRE (Red Reflex Examination) project. It consists of an easy-to-use app with which to do red reflex testing to a child by using an Android smartphone or tablet device. Thanks to redEyes, anyone can verify a possible presence of vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma or retinoblastoma in simple and user-friendly way. Please, help us to complete our work and start clinical testing. Click here for details (italian version only). With you, we do!
